Over the past year, I have been training to become a licensed member of the rescue crew on the BARC North Western Centre Rescue Unit. My interest began at an Oulton Park marshal's training day when I spoke to Colin Witter, the crew chief, and was subsequently invited to their training sessions. I joined the unit at Synetiq, where I thoroughly enjoyed the experience despite the overwhelming amount of information presented in just one day. Here, I was invited to officially join the unit as a trainee, I was thrilled and immediately sent off to obtain my licence.
My first real experience was at Cadwell Park, where I faced multiple incidents, including several Junior Saloons and a Legend car that had rolled numerous times. Thankfully, everyone involved was okay. The training proved effective, and I was able to jump straight into action. I have learned a lot from everyone on the unit, as well as from the paramedics and doctors who work with us.
In March, we travelled to Thruxton for our assessment to become fully licensed, which involved a weekend of intense scenarios. Thanks to our extensive training, we successfully completed the assessment and were awarded our red overalls. Joining the rescue crew has been an incredible experience, and I have no regrets about my decision. I would recommend anybody who wants to expand their experience in motorsport to explore this opportunity.
